Walking in the Light

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7)

The Men’s Residence is a faith-based drug and alcohol treatment program of the Christian Care Center. It’s a 32-week program, but the real journey goes beyond the 7 and a half months. This program is geared to guide men suffering from addiction to a lifelong genuine relationship with the Lord.

This is our only salvation from the pain and bondage we have found ourselves in. It is also the only hope we have for restoration with our children and families. But another thing this program equips the men with is lifelong “battle buddies” to fight the good fight. We create fellowship with other brothers in Christ to keep us walking in the light. It’s one thing to walk the walk in the program, but it’s a whole other thing to walk the walk after the program ends.

We are not helping the men get sober time, we are guiding them in full recovery to walk in for the rest of their lives. These men find new lives in Christ cleansed from the shame, guilt, and pain that held them in chains for so many years. The fellowship these men create with one another is not just friendship, it’s not just hanging out and doing things together, its walking the walk in the light together (keeping one another accountable and stirring one another up in love and good works).

Recently a bunch of the former graduates got together for one of their birthdays. We went night shark fishing. And while real sharks were not caught, the fellowship of a new family was shared. The fellowship of lives cleansed from addiction and destruction were shared as a witness for others to see the hope of Jesus Christ.

As the sun broke through the clouds of the stormy evening sky, bringing hope of the end of the rain, it was a reminder of how the Son broke through the darkness of our lives bringing hope and new life.
